Resumo
O arquivo do Porto remonta aos princípios do municipalismo português, possuindo documentos originais desde o século XIII. Nos anos 30 do corrente século, a documentação histórica começou a ser separada do arquivo central administrativo, cuja gestão se tomou independente. Em 1983, o Arquivo Geral e o Arquivo Histórico voltaram a ser coordenados por uma única chefia, agora elevada ao nível de direção de departamento. Desta farão parte duas divisões de serviços. Ao Arquivo Geral compete a ligação com os serviços administrativos do município, bem como a avaliação e seleção dos documentos, enquanto ao Arquivo Histórico estão cometidas tarefas técnicas específicas e ações de natureza cultural. Após desenvolver a estrutura e organização dos serviços, dar-se-á uma ideia sobre o respectivo acervo documental. Falar-se-á, em seguida, de alguns problemas estruturais, bem como do projeto, em curso, de ampliação e remodelação das instalações. Dentro dos atuais programas de desenvolvimento, será dado particular relevo ao projeto CALIOPE, para arquivo de imagens em disco ótico. Finalmente, apresentar-se-ão as linhas orientadoras do programa de extensão cultural.
