This paper intends to study the steps of the production, accumulation and reorganization of the Casa de Mateus Archive, from 1641 to the 20th century. Therefore, the evolution and the historical context of the family that produced the archival documents are discussed here. Among the family members, D. Luis Antonio de Sousa Botelho Mourão stands out, due to his intervention in the Archive organization. The outstanding contribution of the 4th Morgado de Mateus for the reorganization of the family Archive is demonstrated by his methodology, which was based on the "order to the good use" and connected with the rationalist Enlightenment spirit, fashionable in the 18th century. His work was carried on and furthered by his son, in order to streamline the production, the access and the use of the information, which was useful for the management of the Casa de Mateus. Thus the Archive had an utilitarian function linked to the primary value of its documents. Nowadays the Casa de Mateus Archive can be considered an essential source of information for historical studies.
