An authentic record is one that can be proven to be (a) what it claims to be and (b) free of falsification or inappropriate modification. Proving the authenticity of a record implies the need to protect its identity and integrity over time. Proving the authenticity of an electronic record implies the additional need to protect its identity and integrity across hardware and sofiware platform. The International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems (i.e., InterPARES) Project was instigated in 1999 to address this need. One of the research projects goals is to identify the elements of electronic records that must be preserved in order to ensure their authenticity over time. That work of identification is the responsibility of the Authenticity Task Force and is being accomplished in three steps. The first is to develop a template to guide the analysis of electronic records in relation to authenticity requirements. The second is to cany out four rounds of case studies of electronic records and electronic systems in order to test the validity of the template. The third step is to establish a typology of electronic records based on authenticity requirements. This paper reports on the work accomplished to date in developing the template and the typology.
