Reports and lists facts, acts and gaps observed and studied in archival preservation. It approaches, critically, technical and political aspects of the issue, in an attempt to discuss the uses and misuse of human, technological and financial resources to preserve archives. It notes that the archival science, as a discipline, seeks new paths. In this sense, the question is what is the role of preservation, understood this as an archival function? And in this circumstance, where the preservation can be framed? What is the relationship between records management and preservation? What is the role of the archivist in the preservation of the assets under his responsibility? If to preserve also means to choose and decide, in what way the archivist can participate in these choices and decisions? Are the financial matters, the budget headings, the disputes by funds, part of the role and responsibilities of archivists in relation to preservation in the archives? If preservation is understood as a “product” that is “sold” today for a “delivery” that never fully materializes, how to proceed? In what the preservation of the collections of scientific institutions does differ?
