The Joinville Historical Archive (AHJ) is a unit linked to the Management of Heritage and Museums, of the Secretary of Culture and Tourism (Secult), of Joinville City Hall. It was instituted by Municipal Law No. 1,182, on March 20, 1972, and operated on the premises of the Municipal Library Mayor Rolf Colin until 1986, when its head office was inaugurated. The building was constructed using funds from an agreement with the German Federal Republic and was pointed out as cultural heritage according to Law No. 1,773/1980, being registered in the book list under No.113 since 2015. Methodologically, documents referring to the architectural design of the building and the inventory and listing process as a cultural asset will be analysed. This documentary research aims to analyse aspects of modernist architecture and its heritage process, considering that institutional architecture can be understood as a document / monument, according to the perspective of Le Goff (1997), and the concept of place of memory, by Pierre Nora (1993). This article intends, finally, to discuss the fragments collected in the present for the reinvention and preservation of the past, as an antagonistic process of selection and recreation of memories and heritage, based on questions about the composition of the institution’s collection considering its institutional and architectural history. Modernist architecture and its social projections in the city, above all, based on its uses, functions, intentions and perceptions that are patrimonialized in the institution in its constructive materiality, symbolically become key elements for the constitution regarding the place of memory and the material history of the city.
