O presente texto tem como objetivos historicizar e analisar a relação estabelecida entre os arquivos históricos municipais (AHMs) – locais de memória – e as temáticas de imigração e colonização. Tal relação pode ser analisada mediante uma longa e minuciosa investigação sobre a historiografia que se ocupou do processo de emigração/imigração para o Brasil. Por certo, cada um dos grupos historiográficos manteve um affaire diferenciado com os AHMs, resultando daí interpretações e publicações bastante díspares. Muito desse relacionamento tem a ver com a origem dos AHMs: uma parcela deles teve seu nascedouro ligado às iniciativas públicas, enquanto outros se originaram das ideias e práticas de pesquisadores municipalistas, e não raro alguns surgiram da combinação desses dois fatores. Com tais características, constituem-se locais de memória diferenciados. A fim de aprofundar a análise, tomou-se o Museu Histórico Visconde de São Leopoldo como lócus privilegiado de investigação.
Historical municipal archives and their affair with the themes of immigration and colonization

This paper aims to historicize and analyze the relation between the Municipal Historical Archives (MHA) – places of memories - and the themes of immigration and colonization. This relationship can be analyzed through a long and thorough investigation of the historiography that dealt with the processes of emigration and immigration to Brazil. Each historiographical group maintained a distinct affair with the MHA, which resulted in quite disparate interpretations and publications. Much of this relationship has to do with the origin of the MHA: some of them were born on public initiatives, while others originated from the ideas and practices of municipal researchers, and not uncommonly some emerged from the combination of these two factors. With those characteristics, both initiatives constitute different memory locations. In order to deepen the analysis, we took the Historical Museum Visconde of São Leopoldo as the privileged location of investigation.
