Neste artigo, pretende-se recuperar algumas histórias de artesãos, das irmandades de ofício e valores relacionados ao catolicismo que presidiam o mundo dos ofícios no Rio de Janeiro no fim do século XVIII e início do século XIX. Com este intuito, parte-se da análise de documentos de caráter jurídico (petições, autos de processos, autos de achada e posturas municipais) localizados no Arquivo Geral da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, associando- os a fontes de outros acervos. As histórias aqui narradas apontam para mudanças e permanências no Rio de Janeiro do Antigo Regime e permitem discutir, ainda que brevemente, dois ou três temas: o escravismo, a concepção de trabalho que vigorava entre os artesãos e a ideia de que “cada um deve tratar do seu ofício”.
Almost anonymous lives. The craftsmen, the trade brotherhoods and the General Archive (Arquivo Geral) of the City of Rio de Janeiro

This article intends to recover some stories of the craftsmen, of the trade brotherhoods and the values related to Catholicism that governed the sphere of trade in Rio de Janeiro in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Therefore, based on an analysis of extant legal documents (petitions, judicial records of proceedings, judicial records of discoveries and municipal ordinances) from the General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro, and combining them with sources from other archives and collections. The stories recounted herein show the changes and permanent features of Rio de Janeiro during the Ancien Régime and advances the debate, albeit summarily, of two or three themes: slavery, the concept of work that guided the craftsmen and the notion of “each to his own trade”.
