Em meados de 2007, a reitoria da Universidade da República encarregou ao Arquivo Geral da Universidade (AGU) a custódia do acervo do Instituto da Universidade (ICUR), cujo funcionamento estendeu-se de 1950 até sua intervenção, em 1973. Esse acervo, localizado então no subsolo da Faculdade de Direito, nas dependências do Departamento de Meios Técnicos e de Comunicação, incluía quase 800 películas e mais de 12.000 fotografias produzidas e adquiridas por esse Instituto, assim como seu arquivo administrativo e uma biblioteca especializada em filme e fotografia científica, que conta com exemplares únicos de revistas e edições dos anos 1950 e 1960 do século passado. Este artigo descreve as distintas etapas mediante as quais o Arquivo Geral da Universidade se preocupou em salvaguardar e conservar esse fundo documental e qual foi a metodologia de trabalho aplicada no tratamento do mesmo.
The Audiovisual Conservation Laboratory of the General Archive of the University of the Republic - Uruguay

In mid-2007, the rectorship of the University of the Republic entrusted the AGU (General Archive of the University of the Republic) with the care of the collection of the ICUR (Institute of Cinematography of the University of the Republic), which functioned from 1950 until its end in 1973. This collection – then kept in the basement of the Faculty of Law, within the premises of the Department of Technical Means of Communication – included over 800 films and more than 12,000 photographs produced and acquired by the institute, as well as its administrative archive and a library specialising in scientific film and photography, which includes unique issues of magazines and publications from the 1950s and 1960s. This article describes the different stages the General Archive of the University went through as it sought to safeguard and conserve this documental collection, and the methodology used for its treatment.
