Este artigo traça um perfil do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro desde a data de sua fundação, em 1838, até os dias atuais. O autor aproveita a ocasião dos 170 anos de criação do IHGB para fazer um balanço sobre suas finalidades e objetivos no século XIX e hoje, e as perspectivas futuras da instituição.
This article makes a profile of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute since its foundation, in 1838, until the present time. The author takes advantage of the 170th anniversary of the institute (IHGB) to make a balance of its purposes and objectives in the 19th century and nowadays, and the future perspective of the institution.
