O artigo discute a realidade documental que se expressa sob o termo acervos fotográficos e procura desenhar um quadro de questões sobre o trabalho desenvolvido com esses acervos. O foco incide sobre quatro variações de problemas na gestão de acervos fotográficos: as várias modalidades de formação documental subjacentes ao termo acervo fotográfico; a necessidade imperiosa de se buscar dados contextuais de produção documental e de formação desses conjuntos documentais; os desafios aos quais essa busca está submetida e a sugestão de instrumentos que auxiliem os esforços por uma contextualização dos acervos sob tratamento.
Four variations on the theme of photography collections

This article discusses the documental reality expressed by the term photography collections and seeks to outline a set of issues regarding the work carried out with these collections. The focus is on four variations of problems in the management of photography collections: the several modalities of documental formation underlying the term photography collection; the imperative need to seek contextual data on documental production and the construction of these documental sets; the challenges this search has to face and a suggestion of tools that may be of aid to the efforts towards a contextualisation of the collections being dealt with.
