Este artigo pretende mostrar um aspecto pouco conhecido do Arquivo da Academia Brasileira de Letras: seu acervo audiovisual. Partindo da trajetória da Academia desde o seu surgimento, assim como a constituição e a posterior revitalização de seu arquivo e as divisões conceituais que o caracterizam, aponta para a formação de seu acervo audiovisual, ainda na década de 1960, quando se inaugurou a “Filmoteca”. Questões gerais ligadas à conservação dos suportes e dos conteúdos e os desafios que a atualidade impõe aos arquivos audiovisuais são observadas, explicitando-se mais detalhadamente o tratamento técnico realizado com os materiais em suporte fotoquímico e as especificidades dos itens que compõem esta coleção. Considerando que a problemática da salvaguarda dos conteúdos audiovisuais está relacionada tanto à preservação das mídias quanto de seus dispositivos de leitura e reprodução, além da necessidade de sua digitalização, questões sobre a preservação digital também são levantadas.
Between letters and images: the audiovisual collection from the Archive of the Brazilian Academy of Letters

This article aims to shed light over a little known aspect of the Archive of the Brazilian Academy of Letters: its audiovisual collection. We start from the history of the Academy, since its inception, the creation and subsequent revitalization of its Archive, to the conceptual divisions that characterize it and led to the creation of its audiovisual collection, still in the 60s, when the “Film Library” was launched. General issues related to the conservation of the media and the contents, as well as the current challenges imposed upon the audiovisual archives were observed, explaining in detail the technical treatment performed on the materials supported by photochemical media and the specificities of the items that compose this collection. Some issues are raised, such as the protection and safeguard of audiovisual contents that relates to the preservation of the different media and of its reading and reproduction devices, in addition to the need for scanning and also issues about digital preservation.
