From Marc to Gilberto: the Ferrez family and the appreciation of photography in Brazil

The collector Gilberto Ferrez played an important role in the history of photography in Brazil. His work through books, articles and exhibitions re-veals how the effort towards the rediscovery of pho-tography in the country was inextricably linked to the appreciation of his family's legacy. The analysis of a set of sources reveals how this effort contributed to the construction of the recognition of the grand-father – Marc Ferrez – as a key reference character in the history of photography in Brazil, leading at the same time to the appreciation of his own collection.
