In the personal archive there is a practice of archiving the self, which is, at the same time, evidence of the self and the collective. The objectives of this article are to identify the possible modes of self-archiving and disposal present in individuals'personal files and to highlight the relationships between memory and its material supports. The method used was a literature review with a qualitative bias. Among the results found, it is highlighted that the personal file can be created in different ways and have different uses for its producer, given the diversity of experiences, intentions and motivations arising from the person who was the first user of this documentation. From this relationship between memory and document, it was possible to identify some of the motivations for keeping and/or discarding documents of personal origin; the uses that can be attributed to it; and the particularities and characteristics that can be identified in personal files. Among the conclusions of the study, the importance of memory and the necessary sentimental involvement for the maintenance of personal files stands out, which can be considered one of the possible spaces of remembrance, and that affection is one of the pillars that enables the existence and transmission of heritage from generation to generation.
