The article outlines criteria for selecting supplies intended for the preservation of documents and books, emphasizing the importance of a prior assessment of both the collection and the available storage space. It classifies housing solutions into primary (direct contact with the item, such as envelopes and folders), secondary (boxes and support structures), and tertiary (storage furniture). It recommends the use of stable materials, such as neutral or alkaline papers with a calcium carbonate reserve, inert plastics (polyester, polypropylene), Japanese paper, and Tyvek for the protection of fragile works, as well as alkaline corrugated cardboard and Polionda® (corrugated polypropylene) for secondary structures. It cautions against the use of unstable materials, such as coated paper, kraft paper, newsprint, and synthetic coverings (e.g., percalux), which accelerate degradation. The selection of supplies should consider the condition of the document, environmental risks, and financial feasibility, acknowledging that even temporary solutions, such as offset paper, may be viable when paired with periodic inspections. It concludes that no housing solution is permanent, requiring ongoing monitoring to prevent it from eventually becoming a source of damage.
