O Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN) atua no território sul-rio-grandense desde a criação da instituição, no entanto, com relação às ações voltadas ao patrimônio natural, verificou-se uma lacuna de estudos para o contexto gaúcho. Assim, este artigo teve como objetivo analisar os processos de tombamento abertos pelo órgão sobre bens naturais localizados no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, buscando identificar os atores envolvidos nos processos, quais as justificativas para a abertura ou indeferimento destes, os valores atribuídos aos bens pela entidade e a distribuição espaçotemporal dessa atuação. Aponta-se que, até o momento, nenhum dos processos abertos referentes a tal tipologia de patrimônio resultou em tombamento, e três deles estão ainda em instrução. As solicitações de abertura deram-se predominantemente por órgãos públicos, com justificativas diversas, assim como foram diversos os valores atribuídos pelo instituto em seus pareceres técnicos presentes nos processos. Apontam-se, ainda, lacunas espaçotemporais nas ações realizadas.
Iphan and natural heritage in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: the agency's activies between 1937 and 2024

The National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional–IPHAN) has been active in the territory of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, since its creation. However, regarding actions focused on natural heritage, it has been identified that there is a gap in studies for the context of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Thus, this article aimed to analyze the heritage listing processes initiated by the agency for natural assets located in this state, seeking to identify the actors involved in the processes, the justifications for their initiation or rejection, the values attributed to the assets by the agency, and the spatial and temporal distribution of this activity. It was noticed that none of the processes involving this type of heritage have resulted in listing, with three still under review. The requests for initiation were predominantly made by public agencies, with various justifications, as were the diverse values attributed by the institute in its technical reports present in the processes. Additionally, spatial and temporal gaps in the actions taken have been seen.
