Organizada principalmente pelo National Archives and Records Service (NARS, EUA) e com apoio do Departamento de Estado (EUA), da Fundação Rockefeller e da Organização os Estados Americanos (OEA), a Primeira Reunião Interamericana de Arquivos (PRIA) foi realizada em outubro de 1961, em Washington, EUA e foi continuamente destacada como um evento utilizado para várias discussões teórico-metodológicas sobre a Arquivologia na América Latina. Independente disto, o contexto da participação brasileira na reunião foi pouco estudado e, diante disto partimos do seguinte objetivo geral: “Quais são os efeitos da PRIA no desenvolvimento da Arquivologia brasileira?” Dado o caráter qualitativo do problema de investigação, utilizou-se a investigação documental em fontes primárias associadas às instituições vinculadas ao evento, assim como investigação bibliográfica no BRAPCI, Benancib, JSTOR e Google Scholar. Este aparato metodológico permitiu o alcance dos seguintes objetivos específicos: a) compreender o contexto que precedeu a reunião; b) identificar as principais discussões do evento e c) rastrear as consequências de tais discussões no contexto da administração dos arquivos brasileiros participantes do evento. Os resultados sugerem que a PRIA pode ter influenciado em mudanças de elementos da legislação arquivística da época, assim como pode ter influenciado os primeiros esforços para situar a gestão de documentos sob a responsabilidade de instituições arquivísticas.
Reflections of the resolutions of the First Inter-American Meeting on Archives in archival legislation efforts in Brazil in the 1960s

Organized primarily by the National Archives and Records Service (NARS, USA) and with the support of the Department of State, Rockefeller Foundation and Organization of American States (OAS), the First Inter-American Archival Seminar (PRIA) took place in October 1961, in Washington, USA and was continually highlighted as a landmark for several theoretical-methodological discussions on Archival Science in Latin America. However, in the Brazilian context it has been little studied, thus, it starts with the following general objective: “What are the consequences of the PRIA in the development of efforts for archival legislation in Brazilian Archival Science?” Given the qualitative nature of the research problem, documentary research was used in primary sources associated with institutions linked to the event, as well as bibliographic research in BRAPCI, BENANCIB, JSTOR and Google Scholar. This methodological apparatus enabled the following specific objectives: a) understand the context preceding the meeting; b) identify the main discussions of the event and c) track the consequences of such discussions in the context of the administration of Brazilian archives participating in the event. The results suggest that PRIA may have influenced changes in elements of archival legislation at the time, as well as in the first efforts to place document management under the responsibility of archival institutions.
