Managing Eletronic Recordkeeping Systems at the Turn of the Century
The challenges of managing electronic records are becoming increasingly pressing as computer use inculcates every facet of our business, social and personal fife. These new records are easily changed or destroyed which can lead to the loss of vital evidence, essential information and over time our history and cultural memory. Archivists, record managers, lawyers, information technologists, preservationists auditors and others are greatly concerned with the problems posed by these mutable records. These professions are seeking innovative ideas, technological developments, and the promulgation of new standards, laws and policies to rectify the situation. The issues of electronic records are complex and salient, but much effort is being focussed on finding concrete solutions. This paper discusses the current research on electronic recordkeeping being undertaken in Canada, United States, Europe and Australia. The paper concludes that much progress has been made but archivists and record managers still need a better understanding of the issues relating to the people who manage electronic records.
