The self-reflection about the archivists' role and their relationship with the users of archives are the central themes of this article. The authors propose that these professionals give up their old elite positions of preferential attendance to traditional clientele. The new attitude demands that archival institutions cease to be their "proprieties" and instead become the new users' patrimony.
